10 fire departments respond to fire at Georgia-Pacific facility

GLADYS, Va. (From WSET) - 10 fire departments responded to a fire at the Georgia-Pacific OSB facility in Gladys Thursday afternoon.

Officials say the fire started in a large industrial duct just before 3:45 p.m.

They say the fire crews worked through the evening and early morning to extinguish the blaze.

"The fire proved to be challenging due to the heat intensity and the location of the fire within the duct work. However, through the cooperative efforts of the responding agencies, the fire was contained with no threat to personnel or the community," said Campbell County Fire Marshal Randall Johnson.

Eric Abercrombie, spokesman for Georgia-Pacific, says the company appreciates the quick and collective response by the Campbell County fire departments.

"Safety is the number one priority at Georgia-Pacific, and we are thankful there were no injuries or significant damage to the facility. We're especially proud to support fire departments in the communities where Georgia-Pacific employees live, work, and volunteer," Abercrombie said.

Officials reported that two firefighters became overheated while working at the scene. They say those firefighters were treated by an EMS crew and released to resume their duties.

The Campbell County Fire Marshal has released the scene to Georgia-Pacific. The company will now investigate the incident and how the fire started.

Crews from Brookneal Fire Department, Gladys Fire Department, Concord Fire Department, Lyn-Dan Fire Department, Rustburg Fire Department, Evington Fire Department, Campbell County Public Safety Department, Red House Fire Department, North Halifax Fire Department, and Liberty Fire Department responded to the scene.
