Domtar Hawesville Mill Named Kentucky Manufacturer of the Year

HAWESVILLE, Ky. -- The Domtar Hawesville Mill was recognized by the Kentucky Association of Manufacturers (KAM) as the Kentucky Manufacturer of the Year in the large business category. The award was announced and presented by Governor Matt Bevin at KAM's annual awards luncheon in Louisville on Friday.

Created to focus attention on the important contributions manufacturers and industry make to their employees, customers and communities, this award showcases entrepreneurial spirt, community leadership, and policy contributions made by manufacturers in the Commonwealth to enhance sustainable and long-term prosperity in the state.

"I couldn't be happier for our Hawesville team for receiving this prestigious award," said Steve Henry, Hawesville general manager. "This honor recognizes our team and colleagues for their leadership, employee engagement, innovation, and impact in our local community too."

Domtar is proud to have operated in Kentucky since 1967. The integrated pulp and paper mill is the second-largest employer in Hawesville, supporting more than 450 jobs with an annual estimated regional economic impact of $1.5 billion. The mill produces nearly 600,000 tons of paper annually, primarily in printing and writing paper, as well as hardwood market pulp.

Nearly one third of the 2,000-acre mill site produces other agricultural products such as corn, hay and wheat. Domtar employees also play an important role in the community, giving hundreds of hours of volunteer time on schools boards, chambers of commerce, Junior Achievement programs, Scouting and sports teams. Domtar supports many local charity and outreach programs; our employees are generous with their time and talent as recognized by our 2015-2016 United Way President's Award, Champaign Chairman's Award, and Martin Robertson Memorial Award. In addition, Domtar is proud to support initiatives such as the Exploration Station in Daviess County and the Ben Carson Reading Room at Foust Elementary School in Owensboro.

The Kentucky Association of Manufacturers celebrates over 100 years of advocacy for manufacturers in Kentucky. Established in 1911, the Kentucky Association of Manufacturers is the state's most effective advocate for manufacturers. Their mission is to create and protect a manufacturing-friendly environment in the Commonwealth.
