Environmental Advocacy Groups

Jim,

The global warming debate certainly proves the old adage:  "The figures don't lie, but liars figure."

Comments from last week's quiz where we asked:

What has happened to your opinion of environmental advocacy groups over the last ten - fifteen years?

1 Stayed the same. I have always believed them to be "dust kickers". One would think that reviewing a long standing TV stations records of temperatures over the past 50 years...would supply some meaningful, unbiased data on which the Scientific Method could be applied???

2 When the Greenpeace president finally admitted that they had been wrong on Nuclear Power

3 Global warming

4 They have resorted to baseless rhetoric and protest instead of facts to try to make their points

5 98% of scientists now support their general case. Picking isolated anecdotes to support any view is not science.

6 Declined due primarily to continual fear mongering like they are trying to sell something.

7 Regardless of the progress made in society or by industry, environmental NGO's continue to put out half truths and distortions. Their efforts lack balance, truth and it seems that they most prefer reduction in freedom.

8 Glaciers and icebergs melting, sea levels rising, extreme weather

9 There is such a range of quality in the enviro world that classifying the group is like classifying people of one race or nationality. I have worked with screaming bigots, with sensible enviros and various in between. Agree that the global warming spin is dying, but that is merely the current media favorite issue

10 Sometime helpful; sometimes detrimental depending on the issue.

11 We are stewards of the world. Groups that work against short-termism towards sustainability should be given more force. Greed is the alternative, with no concern for descendents.

12 I think the environmental advocacy groups have good intentions, but I feel they should focus on the micro-environmental issues that are easy to quantify, not the macro-environmental issues that are difficult to quantify - ends up wasting peoples time and money.

I have seen "98% of scientists support the global warming case" (see comment 5 above) many places, but I have never seen the source of this claim.  Maybe I am not bright, but I don't even know how you would go about making such a claim statistically.  The problem starts with which scientist are in your count and which are not.  Methinks it is unprovable.
