Firefighters battle blaze at Ahlstrom Windsor Locks mill

WINDSOR LOCKS, Connecticut (From the Hartford Courant) -- A fire that appears to have begun in duct work at the Ahlstrom mill kept firefighters from Windsor Locks and several other towns busy Monday afternoon.

Windsor Locks Fire Chief Gary Ruggiero said that initially the fire was hard for firefighters to find then access. "It was stubborn getting to it," he said.

Once firefighters were able to access it they were able to extinguish the fire. They were dispatched about 3:30 and completed their work about 90 minutes later. No one was injured, Ruggiero said.

Firefighters from Enfield, Warehouse Point, Suffield and Windsor joined Windsor Locks firefighters in getting to and extinguishing the fire.

Ahlstrom makes specialty papers in the mill, which sits between the Connecticut River and the Windsor Locks Canal.
