Fort Smith's Georgia-Pacific Dixie plans production slow-down; no layoffs anticipated

FORT SMITH, Arkansas (From the Times Record) -- Georgia-Pacific's Dixie facility in Fort Smith is not laying off workers, but a slow-down in production has been scheduled due to market demand and inventory build-up, a G-P spokesperson said Wednesday.

The facility now employs more than 400 people after a $40 million investment in new technology and equipment in 2014 expanded its plate manufacturing capabilities in 2015. Dixie bowls are also made at the facility.

"We're in a unique situation where we've had millions of investment in the past several years with more production capacity, a build-up of inventory and slowing consumer and customer demand," Eric Abercrombie said by phone from Atlanta.

Abercrombie said no specific timeline was available, but the company was "working with the unions" to have the "least impact" with employees and there would be "several weeks through the first half of the year around holidays" where production would be temporarily halted.

"We are not anticipating layoffs," Abercrombie added.

The total compensation and benefits paid to the 400-plus hourly and salaried employees last year at the Fort Smith facility was $28.3 million, the spokesman noted.

Georgia-Pacific's Dixie facility in Fort Smith announced the $40 million investment in 2014 after $30 million invested the previous two years to modernize the plant and "improve its long-term competitiveness in plate manufacturing while meeting the growing demands of our consumers and customers," the 2014 company news release stated.
