Invoice Printer Voyeurism

Last week we asked if your mills was clean by the standards we described. 55% of you said yes.  Selected comments:

I notice a definite correlation between productivity and cleanliness.

Actually I am retired but my home office could be better organized. However I once was hired into a Coating Supt possesion--it quickly became apparent we needed to clean it up. We did but only after I managed to get my former boss hired as production manager were we able to truly clean it up. He was very dedicated to the clean concept and some weekend mornings found him on the M.R. floor with a push broom with several union crew contemplating "who is this guy-it's always been this way. The example was effective in a very short time however--one reason being the personality of him, the other was he was a true leader who could be very effective by treating all with great respect (as long as it was due)

My basement office is a mess only because I hoard paperwork and don't put it into file cabinets so I can find things. I spend too much time trying to find reports and articles I have cut out of journals and magazines.

Several years ago, my mill established cleanliness standards like you described in your article. There is a cleanliness standard just inside my office door and a checklist for my manager to sign when he does inspections. I agree with you that this millwide standard does "spin the invoice printer." We can now see equipment problems before they lead to major down time and fix them more easily because we don't have to clean up the area first so maintenance can get to the problem. They also spend less time diagnosing the problem.

This week we are asking what you think of spending time at the invoice printer. You can take the quiz here or click on "More" below.

Want to get a jump on the surveys? Follow me on twitter, where they are posted early. You can do this here. (note: all respondents are confidential; the software is programmed in such a way that neither we nor anyone else can determine who responded)
