Kamloops, B.C. Domtar worker killed in accident identified

KAMLOOPS, British Columbia (From news reports) -- A worker who died on the job at Kamloops' Domtar pulp mill has been identified.

Unifor says in a news release that Jim Macleod, 57, died following an incident involving a crane at the Domtar mill in Kamloops on June 29.

Macleod had worked in the mill for 37 years and was actively involved with his union, serving as a member of the executive, a local representative on union committees and as a convention delegate.

Unifor says Macleod was a dedicated leader who represented his fellow members in the best possible manner.

"Nobody should lose their life while trying to earn a living," Unifor National President Jerry Dias says in the release. "On behalf of all Unifor members I want to extend our deepest sympathy to Jim's family, loved ones and work colleagues."

On July 4, a flag lowering ceremony was held in Macleod's honour where his family, union members, staff, retirees and Domtar officials gathered.

Unifor says another Domtar worker, who was injured in the incident, has been identified as Ross Thompson. He's now healing at home.

The union's Western Regional Director Joie Warnock says the union will cooperate with any investigation.

"Unifor will support the investigation into how this tragedy occurred with every means at its disposal," Warnock says in the release. "Safe work rules must be rigorously implemented and enforced to prevent the worst from happening."

WorkSafeBC spokesperson Erica Simpson says their investigation is still in preliminary stages.
