Kimberly-Clark, Amazon fill void from diaper bank theft in Wisconsin

APPLETON, Wisconsin (From Appleton Post Crescent) -- Amazon donated 100,000 diapers and 200,000 wipes to the Fox Cities Diaper Bank on Thursday, one day after the theft of 1,777 cases of donated diapers became public.

The theft - believed to have occurred between Jan. 3 and Feb. 13 - involved 13 pallets of cases, or 100,000 diapers, from the Diaper Bank, an initiative of United Way Fox Cities. The theft was first reported on Wednesday by USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin.

Kimberly-Clark Corp. has also pledged 100,000 diapers to the bank.

Nanci Micke, vice president of marketing and communications for United Way Fox Cities, said it was a "wonderful surprise" to receive a call from Amazon Thursday about the donation.

"After what we've gone through with the theft, this has just been such a wonderful, wonderful gift to the community," she said. "This is going to go so far in helping our babies in the Fox Cities and those that are really in need of diapers."

Amazon's 28 pallets were packed in Indianapolis, sent to Kenosha and delivered to Valley Packaging Industries' Kensington Drive facility Thursday afternoon.

"We were really impressed as a company with what they do as a community," said John Henry, assistant general manager at Amazon's Kenosha fulfillment center. "The last thing we want them to do is worry about providing for the community."

Kimberly-Clark's donation is expected to arrive next week.

"We have a very close partnership with United Way and also with the National Diaper Bank Network," said Eleonora Daireaux, vice president of Huggies Brand. "Our immediate response was to help and replenish the diapers so we don't have this impacting the community."

The 1,777 cases of diapers, valued at $45,000, were taken from warehouse on Valley Road in Fox Crossing, according to Fox Crossing police. Investigators are unsure whether the cases of diapers were taken in a single theft or in a series of thefts.

The Diaper Bank provides diapers to 875 babies from low-income families every month. The program supplied 300,000 diapers to babies in the Fox Cities in 2016.

In addition to donations from corporations, civic groups, churches and individuals, the Diaper Bank gets major assistance from Dollars for Diapers, a fundraiser launched by The Post-Crescent and supported heavily by Kimberly-Clark Corp.
