On "The Unwilling": You're right, managers aren't hired to be comfortable

 Jim,

Another good article; managers aren’t hired to be ‘comfortable’, they are hired to get the absolute max out of the provided assets.  As you say, to cause the invoice printer to spin at the max possible rate in the present and to assure that it will continue to spin in the future.

Consider this...

  • Sitting on one’s behind between the rails of the ‘right track’ is a sure way of being run over by the train of progress and competition.
  • Just being on the ‘right track’ isn’t good enough; you must be heading in the right direction and moving faster than the train of change that your competitors are driving that is roaring toward you.
  • When change occurs, three things can happen; there can be no measureable change in results, results can be worse, or results can be better.  Good management is able to improve the odds of the latter outcome and is wise enough to quickly recognize when the latter outcome is not happening and be willing and able to adjust course.

The pity is that it takes so long for most of us to realize and embrace these premises.

Have a great day,
