PLYMOUTH, N.C. – Paperitalo Publications was informed Monday afternoon that a worker was killed and another was badly hurt after an accident at the Domtar pulp mill near Plymouth, North Carolina.

According to several local news sources, the accident occurred around noon Monday, May 5. The workers were employed by CBT Services Inc., a maintenance contractor based out of Chattanooga, Tenn.

On Tuesday, May 6, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office told WITN-TV that Lloyd Greene, 56, of Old Town, Florida, died in the accident, and that Randy Woolard, 56, of Washington, was released from a local medical center.

The Domtar mill, which employs more than 400 workers, was in the process of undergoing its annual maintenance downtime, and a hydraulic cylinder supply line reportedly ruptured in the bleach plant, killing one worker while the other suffered major injuries.

The mill was first opened in 1937, and became part of Domtar in 2007. According to Domtar, the mill has an annual pulp production capacity of 444,000 tons.

Stefan Nowicki, a Domtar spokesperson, told Paperitalo Publications that the company is cooperating with state and federal authorities who are investigating the fatality. Domtar confirmed that CBT had nearly completed maintenance on the mill when the accident happened. Nowicki added that the incident was still under investigation and that the company would provide Paperitalo Publication and other media outlets more information as it becomes available.
