One killed, one injured in accident at KapStone paper mill in North Charleston, S.C.

NORTH CHARLESTON, South Carolina (From the Charleston Post Courier) -- One person was killed and another was injured in a workplace accident at KapStone Paper and Packaging Corp. mill in North Charleston on Sunday.

Lawrence Shiner, 60, of Moncks Corner died, according to the Charleston County Coroner's Office.

The accident occurred about 8:45 p.m. as employees were performing maintenance work in an operating area that was offline for repairs, according to a statement from the Northbrook, Illinois-based manufacturer.

North Charleston police, firefighters and EMS responded.

An incident report from the North Charleston Police Department states officers were called shortly after 10:30 p.m. to assist firefighters and EMS at the mill located at 5600 Virginia Ave.

A coroner responded to the scene. The victim's identity has not been released.

The injured employee was transported to a hospital and has been released, according to KapStone.

The incident was reported to the S.C. Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The statement from KapStone does not detail how the accident occurred, and a spokesman said further information will not be released at this time.

"Our primary concern is for the privacy and welfare of the families involved and for the safety and well-being of employees working on our site," the company said.
