DUBLIN, Ireland (News release) -- Smurfit Kappa has won a Swiss Packaging Award for its innovative 'Universal Box' packaging for industrial pumps.

Smurfit Kappa came out top in the construction category in the prestigious awards which celebrate excellence and innovation in packaging.

The Universal Box protects pumps with a variety of functions connected with drinking water, heating, ventilation and sewage removal.

This clever packaging, which is the brainchild of Smurfit Kappa designer Heinz Störi, was made for BIRAL AG, part of the Grundfos Group which is a world leader in pump manufacturing.

Unlike many other types of industrial packaging, which depend on foam inserts to protect the contents, the Universal Box is made entirely from corrugated cardboard making it 100% recyclable and therefore much more sustainable. Comprised of only three parts, it is also much more flexible and cost-effective.

Thomas Berndt, Managing Director of Smurfit Kappa Switzerland said: "I am very proud of this ingenious solution, which is not only appreciated by our customer, but impressed the jury that reviewed all the entrants. It is another example of how we can create exceptional solutions by gathering insights and working closely with our customers."

The award ceremony, which was organised by the Swiss Packaging Institute, took place at the "Packaging Innovations" exhibition in Zurich at the end of April. The Swiss Packaging Awards have been running since 1997.
