Worker killed in accident at NewPage mill

RUMFORD, Maine - A contracted worker was killed in an accident at NewPage's facility in Rumford on Monday afternoon, 25 Aug 2014.

According to news sources, mill spokesperson Tony Lyons said the accident happened inside the mill around 2 p.m. EDT.

Police confirmed to the River Valley Sun Journal and WCSH-TV that Brant Munster, age 35, of Newport, Maine, died from a fall while working on a crane inside the mill. Munster was reportedly about 28 feet up in the air doing repair work when he struck a roof support and fell.

Munster reportedly worked for crane company Somatex Inc., based out of Pittsfield, and was found dead at the scene when emergency personnel arrived.

The Rumford Police Department responded to the scene, while the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was notified about the fatality.

The River Valley Sun Journal reported that the fatality was the fifth at the paper mill in the past 35 years. Four workers died during the time the mill was owned and operated by Mead Corp.
