 Jim Thompson (L) and Austin Davey On my recent trip to Singapore, Austin Davey, CEO of Build Run Repair (BRR), invited me to their offices.
Build Run Repair is part of the Visy (Australia) and Pratt Industries (USA) group of companies. On their website, it states "BRR provides Technical Advisory, Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management services for the Pulp & Paper, Packaging, Recycling and Waste to Energy sectors."
BRR is located in the modern and efficient Suntec Towers complex in southeastern Singapore.
Austin has been with the Visy and Pratt family of companies for nearly thirty three years. He is completing eight years in Singapore as CEO of BRR. I have known Austin for at least twenty years (I have been a consultant to the family of companies since 1993, a record for arm's length consulting arrangements as far as I know).
In the BRR offices in Singapore, besides the functions described above, are located a recycled materials trading arm, logistics and shared services procurement functions for the parent companies. Company-wide IT has a major presence here, too. Quality control professionals qualify new suppliers for everything from machine clothing to pumps and bearings. Likely, if it is your objective to become a major supplier to Visy and/or Pratt, you'll be making the trip to Singapore to tout your offerings. If successful, your team will become familiar and build relationships with their counterparts in the BRR offices.
BRR grew out of a need to consolidate certain functions and provide internal efficiencies and transparencies for interfacing with a myriad of suppliers to the company as the parent companies grew. Singapore was the logical location choice given its proximity to other Visy, Pratt, supplier and customer locations as well as the very favorable business climate in Singapore.
As a hypothetical, when one has a modern fleet of similar machines as does Visy and Pratt, it makes sense to procure consumables, major maintenance and capital items through a centralized brain and knowledge trust. It makes sense not only from the buying side, which is of course, BRR's motivation, but also on the selling side, reducing selling costs as a supplier has a one-point contact to negotiate prices, terms, conditions and delivery logistics.
Imagine, for instance, having just one packing specification versus more than a dozen. This small component alone yields decent savings for all involved in the transaction.
Austin was a delightful host, taking time to explain the operations to me and graciously listening to my own "war stories." If you have a current or planned business relationship with Visy or Pratt, take the time to learn about the functions centralized at BRR and how they may help you be a valuable supplier to the company.
In my own experience, I can vouch for over a quarter century of reasonable expectations and fair dealings with Visy and Pratt.
