CANADA (From news reports) -- Alberta employer Weyerhaeuser Company Limited is facing 13 charges in relation to the death of a worker nearly two years ago, according to a report.

The incident occurred on Nov. 18, 2023, when the male worker was clearing a blockage from a wood chipping machine at the company's lumber mill, according to a CBC report.

The worker was using a pike pole to remove an obstruction from a canter machine when the tool came into contact with the machine's rotating side heads. The energized equipment ejected the pole with force, fatally injuring the worker.

Weyerhaeuser is facing 13 charges under Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety Act, including failing to ensure the health and safety of a worker, failing to provide adequate training, and allowing a worker to clear a blockage from energized equipment. The charges were filed on March 31, 2025, according to CBC.

The incident occurred at the company's facility in Grande Prairie, approximately 450 kilometres northwest of Edmonton. The lumber mill is one of Weyerhaeuser's major operations in the region.

Weyerhaeuser Company of Vancouver was previously fined $182,000 after a worker sustained a serious injury from being impacted by a forklift.
