RALEIGH, N.C. -- In 1954, the paper industry established a pulp and paper program at N.C. State in part to help man a pulp and paper industry boom in the southern United States. Students in this program were able to receive a B.S. degree in Pulp and Paper Technology (PPT). The students could also stay for one additional semester and receive a second B.S. in Chemical Engineering, a program feature then not available at any of the other schools offering paper science degrees. With strong regional support, an outstanding scholarship endowment, and this unique dual degree program, the NC State program began to establish itself as a dominant program in the United States. In 2004, this program became jointly administered by the College of Natural Resources and the College of Engineering, and its name was changed to Paper Science and Engineering. In 2005, the program became ABET accredited.

Why did you choose Paper Science and Engineering (PSE)?
I chose PSE because during Spring semester of my freshman year I met a senior, Alex May, that was already in the program and he told me all about the major. I was initially planning on studying only Chemical Engineering, but after hearing the passion that Alex had in his voice about PSE I decided to speak with Dr. Byrd and learn more about the program. Then, after speaking to Dr. Byrd, I was hooked with the promise of future scholarships and a wide range of opportunities for summer work and permanent career choices. I CODA'd in the Spring into both CHE and PSE
What is your favorite thing about Paper Science and Engineering?
There are many things about PSE that I love, but I think my favorite is how dedicated the faculty and staff are to the success of students. I have never had an issue speaking to any of the PSE professors about any questions I have. They are helpful for classwork, professional advice, and for just having fun and hanging out
What is your favorite thing about NC State?
My favorite part about going to NC State is going to sporting events with friends. I have been going to almost all of the home basketball games with the same group of guys throughout my time at State. I like the drama of a NC State basketball game. Whether we win or lose I have a great time being part of the student section.
What advice would you offer to an incoming freshman?
In the words of Jim Valvano, don't ever give up. College is a roller coaster ride with many ups and downs. It can be easy to get stuck in one of those down moments, but with hard work and perseverance you can overcome any challenge life throws at you. I also think it is important to get plugged into a group or club as soon as possible. Not only will you begin to form relationships early on, but those people will be your support system to help you through these next 4 (or for my case 5) years of college.
Who has been your favorite professor or staff?
My favorite professor so far has been Dr. Jameel. He is one of the most interesting people I have ever met. He made learning the material a fun and interactive experience. The knowledge, skills, and philosophical life advice I learned in his classes will stick with me forever.
