Crews battle fire at Georgia-Pacific particle board facility in Thomson, Georgia

THOMSON, Ga. (From news reports) -- A fire that broke out at the Georgia-Pacific particle board facility Wednesday in Thomson caused significant damage to the facility.

Georgia-Pacific spokesman Rick Kimble said the fire started in the raw materials storage area and quickly spread. A fire suppression system at the plant was unable to contain the fire because it was moving too fast, he said.

Kimble said as of late afternoon it became "pretty obvious" that at least part of the plant was not going to be able to be saved. He said officials were still working to keep the fire contained to the plant late Wednesday.

Kimble said no one from the plant was injured due to the fire. He said the fire started about 1:30 or 2 p.m. and the cause hasn't been determined.

The facility is located on the 1000 block of Harrison Road in Thomson. Eleven fire departments responded to the blaze, including those from Richmond and Columbia counties.

Kimble said he does not know what will happen to the employees at the plant if it can no longer operate. He said crews are letting the fire burn out due to being low on water.

Georgia-Pacific Corp. earlier this year opened a new, $135 million softwood lumber production facility in adjacent Warren County. The 340,000-square-foot facility is next to its existing lumber mill on U.S. Highway 278.
