Fire at Quad/Graphics in Martinsburg, West Virginia

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (From WHAG) -- A fire broke-out early in the early morning hours at Quad Graphics, a commercial printing company, in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

Just before 5 a.m. Wednesday morning, the Hedgesville Fire Department, along with nine other crews from Berkeley and Washington Counties, responded to Quad Graphics on Caperton Blvd.

Officials stayed on the scene for several hours.

"Upon arrival, there was heavy fire [and] heavy black smoke," Chief Brian Mulligan, Hedgesville Fire Department.

Officials said the fire was caused from a machine shredder.

"It's a shredder type of machine that, when the paper gets shredded, it goes into this baler, and it runs on a conveyer belt. If it gets clogged-up, it will over heat," Chief Mulligan said.

They said one person injured their ankle after a fall while trying to get out of the building. That person was transported to the hospital.

"[The fire] was contained to the machine. It just took a lot of personnel to get to it, keep it contained and knocked down," Chief Mulligan said.

But it is unclear how the fire will affect the company workers.

"I spoke with the manager and released the scene over to him. He's taken care of everything, operation-wise, at this point," Chief Mulligan stated.
