HARTSVILLE, S.C. (From news reports) - A Tuesday night fire damaged a chip conveyor before brought under control by Hartsville Fire Department and Sonoco's fire brigade, according to a statement released Friday.
Sonoco spokesperson Roger Schrum said the fire was under control in about 30 minutes.
According to the report, the fire apparently started about 9 p.m. when a conveyor bearing overheated and sparked a fire at the base of the conveyor which transports wood chips to the mill's biomass boiler.
The conveyor, which was loaded with wood chips, became fully engulfed, damaging the top of the conveyor.
Hartsville Fire Department crews responded to the scene along with Sonoco's volunteer fire brigade and had the fire contained within 30 minutes.
Crews stayed on the scene for several hours cooling down the conveyor and treating hot spots in the wood chip yard to prevent flare ups.
Schrum praised the efforts by the city crews and sent a statement to that affect to Hartsville Mayor Mel Pennington, City Administrator Natalie Zeigler and Fire Chief Jeff Burr.
"We appreciate the quick response and efforts by the Hartsville's Fire Department and other emergency responders for keeping the fire confined and controlled so quickly," he said. "Crews worked throughout the night and their professionalism and training were instrumental in minimizing damage. The ongoing cooperation between Hartsville and Sonoco emergency responders is extremely important to the safe operation of our operations."
No one was injured and the fire was primarily confined to the conveyor and did not impact boiler or paper operations. Sonoco's mill complex produces uncoated recycled paperboard and corrugated medium paper. Damage will take several weeks to repair.
