Former Bemis facility braces for 70 to 110 layoffs

NEW LONDON, Wisconsin (From news reports) -- Employees at a former Bemis North America facility, now called Amcor, are bracing for layoffs.

Internal documents posted in the New London facility tell employees that 70 to 110 workers will be laid off in the future to cut the cost of producing certain flexible packaging products.

The documents were shared by an employee, and confirmed by an Amcor spokesman.

The facility has about 500 employees.

"Several items currently produced in New London will be targeted for optimization and movement to lower cost options throughout the network, which is anticipated to affect 70-110 employees in the facility," reads a memo dated June 4.

"At this time, there are no plans to close the facility, nor are these decisions being driven by Amcor, as we are still two separate companies," the memo states.

Amcor acquired the Neenah-based Bemis Co. one week later in a $6.8 billion deal.

On Tuesday, the day the deal was finalized, Amcor's coprorate spokesman Daniel Yunger said, "no announcements regarding changes to current employment have been made."

"The situation in New London was definitely not related to the Amcor-Bemis deal," said Mark Hein, a Amcor spokesman based in Buffalo Grove, Illinois.

"It was the normal course of business for the Bemis Company, before the acquisition, to consistently review costs and make reallocations to reduce costs for customers and keep its quality high," he said. "They have discussed cost reductions with the union and employees over multiple quarters."

A United Steelworkers local union 2-1970 representative for the New London plant was not available for comment Thursday.

Employees have been told a voluntary meeting will be held June 20 to discuss job openings at other Bemis Fox Valley locations, and additional voluntary meetings will be held in July.

Bemis also has a smaller healthcare products packaging facility in New London and other facilities in Neenah, Oshkosh and Appleton.

Hein said Bemis has "close to 3,000 employees in the Fox Valley," and the meetings are an effort to keep affected employees within the company.
