Georgia Pacific breaks ground on $500 million addition to Green Bay Broadway mill

GREEN BAY (From news reports) -- Wednesday Georgia Pacific broke ground on a $500 million addition to its Green Bay mill on South Broadway. The company will add a new paper-making complex to the mill that is expected to be completed in 2024.

The complex will include a new paper machine using through-air-dried technology, as well as associated converting equipment, buildings and infrastructure. Georgia Pacific unveiled the investment in December of last year, saying it's expected to help grow its retail consumer tissue and towel business. The Green Bay Broadway mill currently operates seven paper machines and a number of converting operations to make bath tissue, paper towels, napkins and facial tissue for both retail and away-from-home uses.

Leaders with the company say 100-plus new jobs will be created to operate the new complex, in addition to the more than 800 employees already working at the mill. Tim Ellsworth, the vice president of manufacturing for Georgia Pacific's Green Bay operations, says many of those jobs will be filled by workers who were affected by the recent closure of its Day Street mill.

"That facility was no longer competitive, it's an older facility and the good news is 80 percent of those employees are in the process of transferring here and joining us as a part of this facility," Ellsworth said.

Brands manufactured by Georgia-Pacific include Quilted Northern, Angel Soft, Brawny, Dixie, enMotion, Sparkle and Vanity Fair.
