International Paper identifies contract worker killed after being pinned in manlift

SAVANNAH, Georgia (From news reports) -- A contract worker was killed at International Paper on Tuesday when a boiler platform collapsed.

Savannah Fire was dispatched to the International Paper's Savannah Mill, located at 1201 West Lathrop Ave., at 8:22 a.m.

A boiler platform was being removed by contract workers. The demolition crew was working to cut through the pipes to remove it when the boiler platform collapsed, said Savannah Fire spokeswoman Jenel Few. Contractor Juan Medina was on a manlift during the collapse.

Medina was trapped beneath the wreckage when Savannah Fire's Technical Rescue Team cleared a passage through the mass of metal boiler pipes and cut through a metal plate.

They found Medina dead beneath the wreckage.

The scene has since been turned over to International Paper's Emergency Response Team.

International Paper Savannah Mill spokeswoman Karen Bogans released a statement Tuesday afternoon.

"We are saddened to learn of the loss of one of our contractor team members, Juan Medina. This is a difficult day for all of us here at the Savannah mill and our thoughts are with Juan's family, friends and colleagues. We are working with authorities to determine the cause of this accident and we will share the findings once we are able to do so. Safety is paramount for all of us at International Paper, which makes today's news that much more difficult to process," Bogans said.
