More on Innovation

In a recent press release, DS Smith, which was recently acquired by International Paper, announced DryPack, a seafood box that reduces costs and CO2 emissions.

The press release states that "DryPack is a 100% water-resistant, box that, when packed with ice, can keep fresh fish below 40 degrees Fahrenheit for over 40 hours in cold chain operations. The high-performance product is shipped to processers flat, saving on incoming freight costs and fuel emissions. DryPack is FBA-approved and 100% recyclable."

The press release goes on to state that "DryPack is the only container board seafood box approved for air freight by the International Air Transport Association, giving seafood processors the ability to safely ship fresh fish for short and long distances. The boxes ship flat to seafood processors - requiring less space than traditional boxes - and are easy and quick to assemble manually or with the use of automation equipment.

DS Smith is changing how the seafood industry delivers seafood, salmon and other fish from catch to customers with DryPack, a proven, 100% recyclable, fiber-based box that meets uncompromising standards and stands up to the rigor of processing and transportation, said Cheryl Holliday, Director, Marketing for DS Smith, North America."

In another press release, it was announced that UPM Specialty Papers and Orkla Suomi are piloting a new paper wrapper for Panda Milk chocolate.

The press release states that "At Orkla Suomi, we want to make everyday life better with local brands that bring joy and make sustainable choices easier. Our products are a combination of tradition, innovation, and sustainability. A great example of our ongoing efforts to replace fossil-based materials with renewable alternatives is the new paper-based chocolate tablet packaging, developed in collaboration with UPM and printing house Walki Westpak. We will pilot this paper-based packaging with Panda Milk Chocolate in spring 2025 to gather insights and experiences from the new solution," says Arja Laitinen, Packaging Developer at Orkla Snacks.

The new type of wrapper for Panda Milk Chocolate is based on UPM AsendoTM Pro 75 g/m2 barrier paper, which has suitable grease barrier properties for Panda milk chocolate. A cold seal lacquer, which has been applied to sealing areas, allows the paper-based package to be sealed on Orkla Suomi's existing flowpack packaging machines, which are normally used to pack products in plastic. UPM Asendo Pro is certified for food safety (BfR, FDA), and the new packaging solution has undergone extensive testing, including shelf-life tests."

In another press release, it was announced that Mondi collaborated with Sherwin-Williams, to introduce re/cycle Spouted Pouch as a refill option for its concentrated paint, sold in the UK market.

The press release states that "Leveraging the expertise in its Halle/Steinfeld plant in Germany, Mondi introduced a wider spout for easier filling and pouring, while ensuring the mono-material pouch is designed to protect its contents.

The paint concentrate was developed to replace the traditional 5-litre pre-mixed paint in rigid plastic tubs. Consumers are encouraged to reuse these tubs to mix the paint concentrate and then recycle the refill's packaging. It comes in a lightweight 950ml spouted pouch with instructions for mixing clearly printed on the side. The spout offers excellent pourability to make it easy to mix with water and create the needed amount of paint. The pouch can be tightly closed after usage, preserving any unused concentrate.

Mondi worked closely with Sherwin-Williams to deliver a solution tailored to their specific packaging needs. re/cycle SpoutedPouch is a pre-made pouch made from polyethylene mono-material and has a wider spout making it easier for Sherwin-Williams to fill the paint concentrate. Mondi's SpoutedPouch reduces packaging waste and provides ease of use to outdoor painting projects, along with minimising the space needed to transport and store paint."

We will keep you apprised of further developments.
