If the moment is right when people say "save a tree" by using less paper, I ask them if they will drink diet soda to save a corn plant. To me that is equally logical.

You have hit upon a subject that has long irritated me much the same as yourself. Quite often, people are much like Lemmings. They will follow one another right off the edge of a cliff without a clue as to why!

One of the letter writers to last week's column ask "I'm looking for that book. One that describes the shoe press, the calendars, etc." My recommendation would be Handbook for Pulp and Paper Technologists ( The Smook Book ) Third Edition by Gary A. Smook...
This book covers the full gamut of the pulp and paper mill, includes good general data and a lot of pictures and illustrations. I buy them by the dozen and take them with me on overseas trips so that I can show clients actual photos of some of the types of equipment that I am recommending to them. More often than not, I end up giving the book to one of the technical people in the mill - thus the need to buy them by the dozen.
