Last week in my column, we asked you an open-ended question, "What do you do to practice clear communications?"
Comments:
> I make a concerted effort to listen and make sure that I understand what is being said and question as needed to clear up any misunderstanding. I try to speak distinctly and keep eye contact with the person/people to whom I am talking.
> Meet with my department twice per week; ask them to explain their reasons, plans or feedback; asking them "does what i have just said make sense?". Lots of time you can see in their eyes that are not following you even if they nod their heads or say "i think so".
> Active listening....try to hear what the person is saying, not immediately leaping ahead to my own solution/action/opinion, before they have finished their statement and I have reflected it back to be sure I have heard it correctly.
