Fire breaks out at DS Smith Birmingham facility

BIRMINGHAM, England (News Release) -- A fire at DS Smith's Birmingham paper recycling depot has been brought under control and extinguished. The company is now working with fire investigations teams to establish damage and the cause of the fire.

The fire at the depot started 1 March 2017 and all staff and visitors have been safely evacuated and accounted for. There have been no reported injuries from the fire.

Early reports suggest that the fire started from machinery running papers for recycling, although the actual source of ignition is still under investigation.

A clean-up operation is under way and a temporary operational plan is in place to keep customers serviced and material moving. The fire had been contained and did not spread to any other buildings on or near the site.

Health and safety is of paramount importance to DS Smith and the company is working with the relevant authorities to help investigate the cause of the fire.
