Södra meets family forestry's increased need for seedlings with a large freezer

Södra's new cold storage for plants was inaugurated by chairman of the board Magnus Hall. Frysen, located in Falkenberg, is Södra's first and has room to handle 40 million forest plants. This is a large increase in capacity compared to previous rental solutions. The investment enables Södra to meet the increased demand for good quality forest seedlings from family forestry in the long term.

Södra's mission is to contribute to renewing and refining the values of the forest farm. With the new frozen warehouse and its integrated packing hall for forest seedlings, an investment of around SEK 100 million, the availability of forest seedlings is ensured and the quality of plant deliveries to family forestry is improved.

-Forest plants are a cornerstone for the forest farm and its future growth, therefore we are very happy that Södra's operations now include a solution that best allows the plants to rest until it is time to plant out in the forest, says Peter Karlsson, operations manager at Södra Forest Plants.

The plant freezer, which is 5,000 m2 in size with additional areas for picking loads, is located near the nursery in Falkenberg and will be Södra's first freezer under its own management. The premises are designed with energy efficiency and working environment in focus, and the proximity to the nursery means coordination gains with existing operations and that Södra gets better quality control over the plants from seed to delivery. With the capacity to store 40 million seedlings, it meets the family forestry's increased demand for forest seedlings in the long term. A new packing hall for sorting and packing plants has also been built for the same facility.

-If we look back a couple of years, the number of pine seedlings Södra sells to members has tripled and the trend is upward overall for our seedlings. With the investment in this state-of-the-art cold storage, we can over time supply quality seedlings to the family forestry farms when the need arises, says Peter Karlsson.
