INDIA (From news reports) -- Six labourers died of suffocation after inhaling poisonous gas as they went down a tank of a paper mill to clean it.
The incident happened at Indian Pulp and Paper (P) Ltd, late on Thursday evening at Hajinagar area under Naihati PS in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
Two workers - Uday Raj and Mithun Prajapati - got down into the tank where paper pulp is made with the help of chemicals. They fell unconscious and in an attempt to rescue them, four more - Amit Yadav, Vijay Verma, Ashok Boral and Md Nazim - went down. When none of them responded to calls officials of Fire Brigade and Disaster Management team were summoned. Equipped with gas masks they went down the tank and brought the six up who were unconscious. Later when they were taken to the hospital they were declared brought dead.
Top police officers including Rajesh Kumar Singh, commissioner of Barrackpore Police Commissionerate, MLAs Arjun Singh, Partha Bhowmick and Subhrangshu Roy rushed to the spot.
Anticipating trouble, Rapid Action Force and combat Force personnel were posted in front of the mill as workers and relatives of the deceased had gathered in front of the mill gate. Singh demanded compensation for the family of the deceased. He also said it would be ascertained if safety measures were taken or not and if found guilty, owner of the mill would be punished according to the provisions of the law.
