Sonoco Warehouse in South Brunswick, N.J. Catches Fire for the Second Time in 2021

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ (From news reports) -- This past Friday, Aug. 27, a Sonoco warehouse on Stults Road in South Brunswick caught fire for the second time this year. The origins of the fire are unknown at this time and are under investigation by the South Brunswick Fire Safety Bureau.

The Monmouth Junction Fire Department was dispatched to the warehouse on Friday, August 27th at 8:00 P.M due to a fire alarm. Shortly after the alarm was set off, employees at the warehouse called 911.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from inside the building. A total of 10 fire trucks and over 50 firefighters responded to the fire, including firefighters from Monmouth Junction, Kendall Park, Kingston, Jamesburg, Plainsboro, North Brunswick Co. #2, Monroe Fire District #3, and Hightstown, according to a press release.

Ambulances from South Brunswick, North Brunswick, and Monroe arrived at the warehouse as well. One firefighter was treated at the scene for heat stress and transported to Princeton hospital as a precaution. No serious injuries have been reported at this time.

"Fortunately, the sprinkler system contained the fire to several palletized stacks of goods in the warehouse," according to Monmouth Junction Fire Chief Scott Smith "It was a humid evening, so we had to rotate our firefighters frequently as they moved goods in the heavily packed warehouse in order to reach the seat of the fire to complete extinguishment. We even had firefighters operating forklifts to move unburned product."

Back in February, the same warehouse caught on fire due to misplaced cardboard canisters stacked on top of plastic pallets. No one was seriously injured in that fire, according to the police department.
