Teach others to lead

The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it. --Theodore Roosevelt

What makes a great leader?

Is it character or personality or something else?

And who develops leaders? Those that want credit or to see success in their compatriots?

How do you teach others to be leaders?

Great leaders teach others how to lead. Ever work for someone you just had to answer to?

Great leaders teach others how to think critically and analyze.

I've worked for people that only wanted "yes men" that only followed orders. I hated it. And never stayed in those jobs for more than a few years. Because I always wanted to do more, and knew that I could do more if given the opportunity.

Working for someone that developed leaders, wow, that would be astonishing!

And I've worked for one for eleven years now.

Someone that didn't "bark orders" but asked me to come up with the plan. Wait? What? You're trusting in me? Wow!

And when it happened. I started to lead and direct others. To the person that gave me that opportunity - thank you for helping me grow!

Be the person that inspires others to be leaders and not followers. Be the person that's an example of greatness and be the person that gives encouragement.

Helen Roush is Executive Vice President of Paperitalo Publications.
