Two injured in Canton, N.C. paper mill explosion, family members say

Emergency crews responded Wednesday morning, August 18, to Evergreen Packaging, also known as the Canton Paper Mill, in Canton after reports of an explosion.

Local media has reached out to local officials, but no information has been released at this time.

A family member of an employee at the paper mill reported two people were injured in some sort of explosion Wednesday morning, August 18, 2021.

On Monday, April 5, 2021, crews responded after a fire was reported inside the facility. Thankfully, there were no injuries.

In September 2020, two workers were killed after a fire at the mill. In March of 2021, two contractors, not associated with Evergreen Packaging, were fined in connection with the incident.

The mill, located on 200 acres inside the town of Canton, employs approximately 1,000 people and is the largest industrial employer in Haywood County. The facility houses four paper and paperboard machines, and according to their website, a variety of liquid packaging board, cup stock and commercial paper are manufactured within the facility.
