SHREVEPORT, La. (From news reports) -- All units have been cleared from the site of a massive fire that burned this weekend on the property of a tenant at the Port of Caddo-Bossier. That's according to Fire Chief Clarence Reese, who gave an update Monday afternoon to the port's Board of Directors during its monthly meeting. Approximately 9,500 tons of containerboard spread over 2.5 acres caught on fire Saturday afternoon. At one point, roughly 100 firefighters from numerous fire departments were on the scene. Crews were there for about 48 hours. Pratt Industries is monitoring the site now. There is no belief the fire was intentionally set, Reese said. A final determination by SFD's fire prevention officer hasn't been completed. As of now, Reese said the cause appears to be a "mistake." "We believe there may have been some issues with whoever was working the forklift and their practices," Reese said. Estimated monetary loss is $1.5 million. Unfortunately, it took Shreveport fire crews 12 minutes to get to the scene instead of their usual 6 minutes. Reese said the delay was because nearby Station 20 is temporarily closed for renovation. The Port's board is discussing how it can help SFD financially to get a temporary station in place. No injuries were reported among firefighters who fought the fire. Mayor Tom Arceneaux released a statement today praising SFD for its "exceptional bravery and dedication in combating a formidable three-alarm fire" at Pratt Industries. "Our firefighters faced an extraordinary challenge this past Saturday, and their response was nothing short of heroic," said Arceneaux. "Led by chief of the Shreveport Fire Department Clarence Reese Jr., their swift action and unwavering commitment ensured the safety of our community and minimized potential damage." The incident began when bales of compacted paper and cardboard ignited, rapidly escalating due to heavy wind conditions and the combustible nature of the materials. Arceneaux said the city is thankful for the neighboring firemen who came to help. More than 100 firefighters from multiple agencies, including Bossier City Fire Department, Caddo Fire Districts 4, 5, 6, and 7, and a tanker from DeSoto Parish, joined forces to battle the fire. "This incident highlights not only the skill and bravery of our firefighters but also the exceptional leadership of Chief Reese," Arceneaux added. "His command and coordination ensured that this fire was contained as quickly and safely as possible. We are grateful for his service and the dedication of every firefighter who put themselves in harm's way to protect our community."
