Worker killed in forklift rollover at Smurfit Westrock site in Yakima, Washington

WASHINGTON (From news reports) -- A 62-year-old man was killed when a forklift rolled over on top of him Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Yakima police were called to Smurfit Westrock's Longfibre Road operation shortly before 10:55 p.m. Tuesday for a death investigation. YPD spokesperson Yvette Inzunza said the investigation has been turned over to the state Department of Labor and Industries.

The man was identified as John Scerbik of Yakima. Yakima County Chief Deputy Coroner Marshall Slight said the forklift went over an embankment and flipped, crushing Scerbik underneath it.

Slight said Scerbik, who was not wearing a seat belt, died from crushing injuries. His death was ruled accidental.
